Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about remakan.
Getting Started
What is remakan?
remakan (re·makan — "eat again" in Malay) is a personal food journal and discovery app for Malaysia's street food scene. Bookmark stalls and dishes you spot, write reviews after your visit, and explore your city's culinary scene on an interactive map.
Is remakan free to use?
Yes — remakan is free to download and use on both iOS and Android.
Which platforms does remakan support?
remakan is available on iPhone (iOS) and Android. Download links will appear on the home page once the app is live on the App Store and Google Play.
Bookmarking & Reviews
How do I bookmark a food stall?
Search for a stall by name, or browse the map to find one near you. Tap the stall to open its detail page, then save it to your bookmarks. You can set its status to "Want to Try" straight away, and update it to "Tried" once you've visited.
What's the difference between "Want to Try" and "Tried"?
These are the two main statuses for your bookmarks:
- Want to Try — you've spotted or heard about the stall and plan to visit. Great for keeping a running list of places to check out.
- Tried — you've been there. You can add a written review, up to 8 photos, and optionally star it as a favourite.
What does the "Avoid" flag do?
Flagging a stall as Avoid hides it from your personalised recommendations — useful if a place has closed, wasn't to your taste, or you just never want to see it suggested again. You can still find it by searching, and you can always remove the flag later.
Can I write reviews and add photos?
Yes. Once you mark a stall as "Tried," you can write a review and attach up to 8 of your own photos from your camera roll. Your photos are stored privately in your account — remakan only displays them to you, never to other users.
What are dish tags?
Dishes are the canonical tags in remakan — things like "Char Kway Teow," "Nasi Lemak," or "Teh Tarik." You can tag your reviews with the dish you ordered, building a searchable catalog that makes it easy to find every stall you've tried for a particular dish, and to see which dishes are trending across the community.
Discovery & Maps
How does the map work?
The map is powered by OpenStreetMap and shows your bookmarked stalls as pins. Place details — name, address, opening hours, and Google ratings — are fetched live from Google Places, so the information is always current. remakan stores only the place ID and coordinates long-term; it never caches Google content permanently.
What is the Explore screen?
The Explore screen is your discovery hub. It shows trending dish tags across the community, a curated "Want to Try" list sorted by Google rating, and a feed of the most recent reviews so you can see what others are eating right now. It's a great starting point when you're not sure what to try next.
How do trending tags work?
Trending tags reflect which dishes are getting the most bookmarks and reviews across all remakan users. A badge next to each tag shows how many times you personally have bookmarked that dish, so you can spot your own patterns alongside community-wide trends.
Account & Privacy
Are my bookmarks and reviews private?
Your bookmarks, photos, and personal notes are private to your account. Some community features — like trending dish tags and recent reviews on the Explore screen — use aggregated activity, but your personally identifiable information is never exposed to other users.
